Description
Is This Subsonic Round For You?
This 730-grain 45-70 load is for those who like to think outside the box. What began as a pestering curiosity, slowly turned into experimentation and exhaustive pressure testing and stability testing across a wide range of velocities. The result: the most interesting 45-70 subsonic ammo on the market. Rifles with the most common 45/70 twist rate of 1:20 (such as the Marlin 1895 and Henry lever action rifles) are able to stabilize this monster of a bullet past 150 yards (18.5″ barrel 1895) with no problem! Some 45/70 rifles have a 1:28 twist- which may be too slow for this bullet.
As with all heavy-for-caliber bullets, confirm that your particular firearm can stabilize the 730 gr 45-70 prior to shooting through a suppressor. The easiest way to do this is to look at the shape of the hole left on paper targets. Round holes = stable and suppressor safe, oblong or keyholes = not stable enough for suppressor use (in that rifle).
This has quickly become our most popular 45-70 round, outside of our Trapdoor-safe loads. Even after the release of our 777 grain, this is our favorite subsonic 45-70 load. While some 1:20 barrels have trouble stabilizing the longer, 1.75″ bullet, this 730 grainer is slightly shorter, lighter, and can be pushed harder- while still maintaining safe pressures.
